Following those changes, both in use of digital tools for writing and instruction of writing, it is important to prepare our students for academic, business and social environments outside the university. A move to composing and editing on smartphone screens, use of digital tools like spelling and grammar checkers, writing assistants and even artificial intelligence needs to be taken into account to effectively teach writing to non-native speakers. A move to broaden the focus from traditional essays to more informal and collaborative writing is more in line with what students will encounter after they graduate.
