This paper reexamines the narrator/protagonist’s unbearable experience.\n　　In the first half of the story the narrator’s humiliation takes place in a closed bus. The narrator/protagonist is masochistically impressed with himself, and the story borders on the fantastic. In the latter half, the story moves to the world outside the bus, and the narrator/protagonist faces a harsher reality.\n　　The discrepancy between the two scenes characterizes the story. The  narrator/protagonist, who has masochistically buried his head in the sand of post-war Japan, is suddenly exposed to the real world where he can’t behave as he had in the past.
