The narrator tells the story chronologically beginning with Kiichiro, the first director of a mental hospital （originally in Matsubara, Setagaya） and then continues to tell the stories of Kiichiro’s successors at the hospital, characters modeled on his grandfather, father, and their relatives. This paper focusses on how the narrator looks at historical changes from the Taisho to the postwar Showa eras.
