Amber’s media practices have been discussed principally from the perspective of art and social movements in previous research; this paper will consider Amber from the perspective of design. After a brief overview of Amber’s long career, the author introduces the recent “Learning and Participation Project” and suggests that it is a turning point for Amber’s design activity. Specific cases of the “Learning and Participation Project” include 2 projects implemented in collaboration with local elementary schools on the culture of a juvenile jazz band and the history of the shipbuilding industry, both of which once existed in the area.
